Nestled along the rugged coastline of Massachusetts, amidst the whispers of history and the enchantment of old-world charm, lies the bewitching city of Salem. A place where the echoes of the past resonate in every cobblestone street and where the spirit of the witch trials still linger. But amidst the tales of the supernatural and the occult, there exists a modern-day relationship between Brimstone (me) and Witch City. Why, you might ask? I’ve been an unwavering ally for countless years. In the heart of this historic city, where the line between reality and fantasy blurs, I’ve somehow managed to carve out a unique niche, becoming a part of this community in ways that few outsiders could. I’m extremely proud and grateful for that.
For centuries, Salem has been synonymous with witchcraft, magic, and the occult. Its very name conjures images of broomsticks, black cats, and cauldrons bubbling over with mysterious potions. Yet, beyond the veil of superstition lies a vibrant community brimming (pun intended) with creativity, resilience, and a deep reverence for its storied past. So what exactly is it that makes my relationship with Salem so special? Perhaps it's the appreciation for the city's rich history and culture. Or the bonds I share with the many businesses therein – I know their names, their stories, and do my best to extend my audience to each and every one of them. Or maybe I just add an extra layer of intrigue to Salem's already captivating allure... Whatever the reason, one thing is for certain – Brimstone wouldn't be the same without Salem, (and my ego would LOVE to think vice versa- but we know that isn’t the case!)

First and foremost, I’d like to announce a couple of my own contributions to the city that I would love for you to check out while in the area. As of March 2024 – I have joined my witchy-pal, Borah as an attraction at the Salem Halloween Museum!!! That is correct, there is now a Brimstone Exhibit that can be found right smack dab in the middle of Essex Street… I can hardly contain myself! I’ve loaned a grouping of memorabilia, photoshoot and television ‘screen used’ pieces including items featured on-screen of The Big Bang Theory (CBS) and Billions (Showtime). Now, what IS this place you may ask? Amidst the whispers of spirits and the enchantment of the season, lies a hidden gem for Halloween enthusiasts – the Halloween Museum. Stepping through its doors is literally like stepping into a world where EVERY day is All Hallows' Eve. From vintage costumes and nostalgic artifacts, to elaborate displays that capture the essence of this beloved holiday, the Halloween Museum is a treasure trove of all things spooky and spectacular. Whether you're a die-hard fan of the macabre or simply looking to indulge your inner child, there's something for everyone within its walls. As you wander through the exhibits, you'll find yourself transported to a realm where witches, ghouls, and monsters reign supreme, and where the magic of Halloween knows no bounds. So if you yourself are strange and unusual, be sure to pay a visit to the Halloween Museum – where every day is a celebration.
Nestled amid the historic streets and quaint storefronts, lies a culinary gem that locals and visitors alike swear by – Red's Sandwich Shop. Honestly speaking – our partnership aside… this is a MUST VISIT. Stepping into this legendary diner style restaurant feels like coming home with its welcoming atmosphere. But what keeps patrons coming back for more, is the mouthwatering comfort food that has made Red's a beloved institution for generations. From HUGE fluffy pancakes dripping with maple syrup to overstuffed plates of deliciousness - bursting with flavor, every dish at Red's is crafted with care and served with a side of genuine hospitality. Whether you're fueling up for a day of exploring Salem's attractions or simply craving a hearty meal made with love, Red's Sandwich Shop is the place to be. Be sure to look for their fun and tasty specials! I'm beyond humbled and honored to announce my NEW MENU ITEM at Red’s… Brimstone's Rise and Grind Breakfast!!! It's literally a mountain of meaty flavor behavior, topped with two scrumptious eggs, that'll tantalize your taste-buds and get you ready for a day of adventure in Salem! This collaboration has been a long time coming, and it's truly an exciting moment for yours truly. I hope that everyone who finds themselves in the area will stop by and enjoy this breakfast of badassery! Pull up a chair, order a taste of Salem's culinary history at its finest.
Next I would like to introduce you all to an EXTREMELY important ally throughout your epic journey in Salem – Destination Salem. Before I make my way into the area, the first thing I do is call my friends at Destination Salem (aka Haunted Happenings during October’s Halloween Season). For those of you who aren’t familiar, Salem is almost like Disney for people who enjoy the darker things in life! It gets busy and things get booked up quickly for spooky season, so Haunted Happenings is your one-stop-shop for your daily goings-on in the city. They’ve got all the info on street closures, parking and special events- like the Annual Haunted Happenings Grand Parade. Salem is open for tourism year-round [Download your FREE travel guide HERE] but to be blunt, if you don’t like BIG crowds consider planning your trip for September or November (or literally ANY of the other nine months of the year!) Seriously, there is NOTHING cooler than experiencing the world famous witch country in the midst of spooky, sweater weather season; but if you have a phobia of large crowds – I can promise you’ll be very unhappy.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
PARKING:
Let me be as clear as a crystal ball – parking in Salem… in October… is damn near impossible. Trust me, you’d prefer a slow death rather than attempting to find parking throughout the city. IF possible, seek alternate transportation into the area. If it is NOT possible – Get into town EARLY! You’ll potentially find street parking that requires you to pay a meter for a specified amount of time. If you find a spot – I would suggest you KEEP IT and nurse the meter all day! Alternately, you can find your way into one of the few parking garages – however they fill up QUICKLY.
EXPAND FOR ALL PARKING OPTIONS
Below is an excerpt from Destination Salem :
For information about the FREE October weekend shuttle, click here.
If you have visited Salem before, you might find new meters or time regulations in the lots and spots you’ve used in the past. Some parking fees have increased, and some parking fees have decreased. Meters may be paid for with coins or by downloading the Passport Parking app.
If you are planning your first visit to Salem, we are happy to tell you that all of Salem’s downtown attractions are within a 10- to 15-minute walk from any parking area. So we hope you will take advantage of our walkable streets and the Salem Trolley.
You can find information on parking in Salem at on the City’s Traffic & Parking website and an interactive parking map can be found here.
Note : Parking rates at City Garages and many lots increases during October. For more information about parking in October, visit HauntedHappenings.org.
The City of Salem has posted a number of parking spaces downtown as 15-minute parking only, to pick up take-out orders from downtown restaurants. Please do not park in any of these signed spaces for more than 15 minutes.
SIDE QUEST: Once on Essex Street, make sure you keep your eyes (and ears) peeled for the city’s most well-known and hilariously funny street performers, Borah. Well, in full – Borah Brewington Snaggletooth XIII. Honestly speaking, friendship aside, one of the most hilarious talents I’ve seen work a crowd! Yes, if Borah looks familiar, you may have caught her performance on, ‘America’s Got Talent’. One of the friendliest, engaging and entertaining folks you’ll meet! A must see when visiting – so be sure to seek and find. (**Side note: Any money raised by Borah is actually used at the end of the year to provide gifts for children and people in need… so feel free to tip and donate to a good cause)
BONUS QUEST: While walking down Essex Street – You’ll bump into a variety of different street performers from Jack Skellington to Frankenstein and literally EVERYONE in between. Please keep in mind that they work for tips, so if you opt to request a photo – it is suggested that you are prepared to make a small donation to their tip jars or cash app (they are using technology now). Also, please treat them all with respect… they are outside all day dealing with tourists and trying to earn a buck doing something fun and creative – offering a buck is a choice, treating people with dignity is being human.
WHERE TO STAY:
THE COACH HOUSE
Address: 284 Lafayette St, Salem, MA 01970 | Phone: (978) 219-6788
While there certainly is a variety of options in the area for lodging – NOTHING holds a flame to, The Coach House. This eleven-unit boutique hotel is recently renovated, and is located less than a mile from downtown Salem. The estate blends historical sophistication with modern updates, offering a fresh sense of wonder and luxury. Each room features WiFi, a Smart TV, and personal concierge service. Originally owned by local sea captain Ephraim Augustus Emerton, The Coach House was built in 1879 with Victorian elegance. Converted to an inn in the 1950s, it has since been transformed into a boutique hotel in 2022, maintaining its historic charm while integrating contemporary amenities and comfort. One step into this spot and I legit fell in love… it is GORGEOUS. Honestly… OBSESSED. I highly recommend looking into a stay with this INCREDIBLE boutique hotel with all the trimmings! Location wise, you can’t get any better as they are a hop, skip and a jump from town. The suites are clean, comfortable, chic... everything you'd want in a get-away wrapped tightly in a perfect black and white bow! The entire property is stunning, and the location itself can't be beat. Keep in mind, there IS limited parking on premises and in the busy months, limited parking availability in the area; So I’d recommend as they are only a few blocks away from all the action – walking rather than driving into town should definitely be considered. Everything during my personal stay was literally perfect. Very cool experience - all digital check-in and check-out. Ideal for exploring Salem and its coastal surroundings, The Coach House promises a unique stay!
THE HAWTHORNE HOTEL
Address: 18 Washington Square W, Salem, MA 01970 | Phone: (978) 744-4080
The Hawthorne Hotel is another interesting spot to stay if you’re looking for a hauntingly cool experience. The Hawthorne Hotel is renowned as one of America's most haunted hotels, with numerous eerie encounters reported by guests. Reports include mysterious furniture movements, sightings of a ghostly woman, and unexplained noises echoing through its halls. The hotel's paranormal reputation extends to its appearances in popular media and events. I have not personally stayed there; however I know many people who have – all who have enjoyed their personal experience.
ACHEIVEMENT UNLOCKED: According to local lore, Room 325 is infamous as the most haunted room in the hotel, while reports of a ghostly woman haunting Room 612 and the sixth floor have added to its spectral mystique.
WITCHES DORM – SALEM SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT (AIRBNB)
INQUIRE ABOUT BOOKING HERE
Lastly, I highly recommend the Witches Dorm aka the Salem School of Witchcraft, where the enchantment knows no bounds! This AWESOME AirBNB is designed to make you feel immersed into the wizarding world of Harry Potter. This whimsical abode is tailor-made for budding witches and wizards, offering not just accommodation but a gateway to real magic classes. Imagine waking up to a breakfast bar stocked with cereals, snacks, oatmeal, and an endless flow of coffee and tea—available round the clock to fuel your mystical adventures. Your hostess, an accomplished artist with a background in the toy and game industry, has imbued every corner of this magical retreat with creativity and charm. Downstairs awaits the Alchemist’s Library, a delightful haven for magical discussions and leisurely breakfasts. Outside, a serene garden beckons for moments of relaxation and contemplation. Please note, there isn't a public kitchen, but with such enchanting surroundings, who needs one?
BREAKFAST:
Let’s be real… you’ll need to be energized before a day in the cobblestone streets! It’s important to start yourself off with a hearty breakfast… or a light snack – or at very least a coffee! Just make sure that you fill your bellies before embarking on your journey.
RED’S SANDWICH SHOP
Address: 15 Central St, Salem, MA 01970 | Phone: (978) 745-3527
As aforementioned, I highly suggest that your first stop would be the legendary, Red's Sandwich Shop for breakfast (you can do them for lunch too – you just don’t want to miss them). To say that this spot is an absolute WIN would be an understatement... Everything is utterly perfect! The wait staff is beyond sweet and uber helpful in making the right choices for your first time – a great start to a positive experience. Red’s cast of sweet, friendly and knowledgeable staff will make your short time with them feel like family. Don’t forget to try my menu item, Brimstone’s Rise & Grind Breakfast… IF YOU DARE.
SALEM’S RETREAT
Address: 96 North St, Salem, MA 01970 | Phone: (978) 290-0958
Another favorite is Salem’s Retreat – Right outside of town, the flavor behavior that is produced out of this restaurant in incredible, not just edible! Again, you can dine here for breakfast or lunch – but make sure you’re there early as they are always jam packed. The staff here is friendly, knowledgeable and will ensure you have a wonderful dining experience. I suggest the Steak Tips as they’re magically delicious.
COFFEE TIME BAKE SHOP
Address: 96 Bridge St, Salem, MA 01970 | Phone: (978) 744-0995
My last suggestion for a breakfast is Coffee Time Bake Shop. Quick and casual, this is a fun stop for a fast bite to eat before a long day chasing after witches and warlocks. It is primarily a bakery, featuring donuts and breakfast pastries. Watch for seasonal special donuts such as apple cider, Sufganiyot, and Paczki-- make sure to pick one up while they are available (they run out fast). They have a fantastic array of hot and cold drinks to choose from, so you’re sure to find something delicious and delectable to treat your taste buds. They also serve breakfast sandwiches, so you can either eat there or take it for on-the-go!
SIDE QUEST: If visiting Coffee Time – Make sure to plan a visit to the Satanic Temple which is right down the block! It’s home to The Salem Art Gallery, and is highly recommended – You don’t have to worship Satan to visit the Temple.
EXHIBITS & ATTRACTIONS:
At this time, you are probably going to be itching to make your way to all the exhibits and attractions. Let’s face it, this is what you’ve come for… let’s maximize your time spent! There is literally SO much to see that it can certainly be overwhelming. You have only so much time, and you don’t want to miss anything cool, right? The following is a grouping of places that you NEED to find a way to fit into your scheduling. I mean, you don’t have to… but I absolutely recommend you do! Of course I’ll remind you to make sure to catch the Brimstone Exhibit over at the Halloween Museum on Essex Street. That area is normally VERY busy, so knowing where you’re going will help you tremendously – you’d hate to be one of the zombies walking around aimlessly, right?
SIDE QUEST: Do a little shopping at the Wynott’s Wands store – which legitimately could have been pulled directly out of a Harry Potter film and transplanted into Salem.
Address: 127 Essex St, Salem, MA 01970
ACHEIVEMENT UNLOCKED: Across the way from Wynott’s is the Gardner-Pingree House… better known as the CLUE HOUSE. You’ll want to drop by and take a few photos – Perhaps you’ll be one of the lucky ones to capture a snapshot of the haunts still living therein. You’ll be better off stopping during the daytime as it is inundated with tours later in the evening.
Address: 128 Essex St, Salem, MA 01970
SIDE QUEST: Grab some souvenirs from Moody’s Gifts while you’re over there as well – They have the coolest hand-made air blown glass pumpkins that are uber adorable! I love mine… you should have one too. Just saying.
Address: 109 Essex St, Salem, MA 01970
REAL PIRATES
Address: Charlotte Forten Park, 285 Derby St #5, Salem, MA 01970 | Phone: (978) 259-1717
Now, if you’re interested in pirates (who isn’t), I would highly suggest a visit to Real Pirates which is a whole experience. Now, please don’t get them confused with the dark, dank, New England Pirate Museum across the way – this is a beautiful and immersive opportunity rather than the older exhibit that I’ve personally found unlikable. At Real Pirates, you have the unique opportunity to browse actual artifacts from the wreck of the Wydah – an actual pirate ship that was buried down in Davey Jones’ locker. Now, I don’t want to spread rumors, but I can tell you that there is a presence in that building that you WILL feel in certain areas! There have been countless reports of paranormal activity (what else would you expect from historic items excavated from a horrible shipwreck claiming many lives), so I would make sure to add them to your list of MUST DO.
BIT-BAR SALEM
Address: 278 Derby St, Salem, MA 01970 | Phone: (978) 594-4838
Albeit this next spot is a great place to catch a bite to eat – I wanted to list it as an attraction simply because it’s also an arcade featuring classic games and pinball machines! The place I’m speaking about is called Bit-Bar and it’s across the street from Real Pirates (next door to New England Pirates). Please keep in mind that after a certain time – it’s 18 and over only, so families should plan accordingly.
MAHI CRUISES
Address: 24 Congress St, Salem, MA 01970 | Phone: (978) 825-0001
Time for something a little different – Take a load off from all the walking you’ve been doing already, and schedule yourself for a cruise of the harbor with Mahi Cruises. For real… you don’t realize how much you need this break off your feet until you get there, relax and enjoy the smooth sailing! During spooky season, September 29th through October 31st, they cruise from Downtown Salem’s Pickering Wharf. The Haunted Happenings Harbor Cruise features haunted décor, complementary tarot card readings, and live storytelling. You’ll be welcomed aboard the Hannah Glover, for an unforgettable experience. This double decker beauty accommodates up to 155 passengers, ensuring plenty of space and comfort throughout your journey (they do keep ticket sales limited to 85 for a more intimate feel). As you step on board, you'll find yourself with the choice of cruising on the open air top deck, or the cozy heated main cabin (complete with three pristine bathrooms which is a WIN). They have an expansive top deck bar, offering a tantalizing array of local craft beers, expertly mixed cocktails, and their renowned Grandma’s Spiked Hot Apple Cider—perfect for those looking to unwind and enjoy the scenery. They have the dry-folk and youngsters covered too, with a selection of sodas, waters, juices, and hot chocolate. Their food offering is quite simple - backyard barbecue classics including burgers, hot dogs, and veggie burgers, all prepared fresh to order. Furthermore, you could grab a steaming cup of chicken noodle soup or a bowl of New England’s beloved clam chowder—it's sure to warm your soul as you cruise along the beautiful waters. Very worth the downtime – plan into your schedule accordingly.
SALEM WITCH MUSEUM
Address: 19 1/2 N Washington Square, Salem, MA 01970 | Phone: (978) 744-1692
Now, when you’re seeking a history lesson concerning the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 – look no further, because no trip is complete without stepping foot in this legendary location… The Salem Witch Museum. First and foremost, the building is overwhelmingly gorgeous – standing tall in the center of Salem, it is just as mystical in the daytime as it is at night! Architecturally speaking, it is just absolutely impressive to look at while walking through the city. The presentation itself is old school - awesome and educational… It takes you back to a time where innocent people were senselessly killed for being accused of witchcraft. For those returning after having not been there for years – this is incredibly nostalgic as it is literally the same show as it was when you were visiting on your elementary school trip – except they DO have a new area that is filled with fun information and an original copy of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Again, this is a MUST SEE attraction when in the neighborhood (also, the gift shop is jam packed with really cool and exclusive stuff and things)! Don’t miss out and BOOK EARLY – they sell out extremely quickly daily.
COUNT ORLOK’S NIGHTMARE GALLERY
Address: 217 Essex St, Salem, MA 01970 | Phone: (978) 740-0500
Ok, you’ll need to make your way over to Count Orlok’s Nightmare Gallery which is one of the best… if not THE best Monster Museum I’ve ever seen with my own eyes. They continuously keep things fresh by making a few new additions here and there, and it is more than well worth the visit if you are a fan of the Horror genre. One of the coolest things about this hotspot – is that everything inside is a part of the owner’s personal collection… and it is a very extensive collection! It would not be a trip to Salem without visiting Orlok’s.
ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED: Inquire about the PRIVATE TOUR “Lifting the Coffin Lid” with James (the owner) himself – You will relish in the stories told and pieces that are simply priceless. These tours are difficult to book as they’re not readily available – few and far between. Why? Because it is VERY worth it!
SIDE QUEST: Understand, it is a rite of passage for anyone visiting Witch City to stop over at the infamous Bewitched Statue for a few photos. Located directly in the heart of Salem, a touch of TV magic awaits. This charming bronze tribute to Samantha Stephens, the beloved character from the classic TV show "Bewitched," captures her iconic pose atop a crescent moon. Erected in 2005, the statue celebrates Salem's enchanting ties to pop culture and invites fans to relive the whimsical charm of the show amidst the historic streets of this storied town.

As you wander through its dimly lit rooms, with their low ceilings and creaking floorboards, you can almost hear the whispers of the past. Now, with only a short walk away, the Salem Witch Village provides an atmospheric journey through the world of witchcraft, featuring interactive exhibits, historical artifacts, and spellbinding displays that explore Salem's magical and mystical traditions. It's hard to forget Max’s top-floor bedroom, complete with that enviable lookout accessed via a spiral staircase—a scene that left every millennial wishing for a similar setup as kids. This iconic house, still privately owned and inhabited by a lucky family, holds a special place in film history. As much as fans might want to see it up close, it's important to respect the residents' privacy and property when visiting this beloved landmark.
2. Allison's House - The Ropes Mansion- 318 Essex St. Salem, MA
If you're a fan of "Hocus Pocus," Allison’s house, where the Halloween party took place, is a must-see landmark in Salem. This historic site is where the memorable line, “What do you call them, Max? Yabbos?” was delivered, adding a touch of cinematic nostalgia to your visit. Be sure to check out the gardens around back, as they are not to be missed.
3. Old Town Hall - 32 Derby Sq. Salem, MA
Who could forget Winifred Sanderson's electrifying performance of "I Put A Spell On You" at the town’s annual Halloween ball in "Hocus Pocus"? And let’s not overlook Max and Dani’s mother, who stole the show in her iconic Madonna costume, fully embracing the Halloween spirit. Visiting Old Town Hall offers a perfect blend of movie magic and Salem’s rich history, making it a must-visit for any fan.
4. Salem Commons - 30 Washington Sq. Salem, MA
The Salem Commons make several appearances in Hocus Pocus, but one of the most memorable is when Allison returns Max's note with his phone number written on it. 5. Cemetery - Old Burial Hill - Marblehead, MA
After Allison returns his phone number, Max bikes through the Old Burial Hill cemetery where he encounters town bullies Jay and ICE, with ICE's name etched into his hair. Pioneer Village welcomes visitors with open arms, providing guided tours for an immersive historical experience!

Phillips Elementary School, transformed into John Bailey High School in Hocus Pocus, is now closed. This iconic building plays a prominent role in the film, notably during the Sanderson Sisters’ pursuit to recover Winifred’s spell book. Max, Allison, Dani, and Binx believe they've triumphed after trapping the Sanderson Sisters inside the school's furnace, only to find them returning unexpectedly.
SHOPPING THE WHARF:
You certainly want to spend a little time down at the wharf, as there are a couple of key spots to drop by including, The Ossuary (sister store to Die With Your Boots On ) a cool, dark little gothic shop with an array of vintage and badass looking stuff in it! Right next door is a newer store called, House of Boo – and they have a lot of monster-esque goodies that are fun and kitschy! If you are heading there before December and celebrate Christmas – they have a plethora of cool ornaments for your tree. Next you have another MUST VISIT right on Derby Street a little passed the Pickering Wharf Marina (You’ll see a really TALL Ship which is part of the Salem Maritime National Historic Site called the Friendship - she is actually a replica of an East Indiaman Merchant Ship). ADDITIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS UNLOCKED:
There are a few really interesting things for all of you ghost hunters out there – so I am going to share a couple of things with you that you should check out.
EXPAND FOR PRIME GHOST HUNTING LOCATIONS
The Howard Street Cemetery along with the corner of Federal Street and St Peter Street is supposedly one of the most haunted areas of Salem. It is the location where Giles Corey’s unmarked grave is, near the site of his execution. Many others buried there died in tragic accidents, including those who perished when a floor in the Salem Jail collapsed. A lot of bad things happened where the building located at 10 Federal Street stands (it is set over the original jail that housed the accused witches way back in 1692). Accused witches were jailed, tortured and murdered on these grounds – then dumped into a hole over by the cemetery. If you are hunting ghosts – go between 12am – 3am as this is when the activity is often caught.
Turner Seafood is one of the most well-known, world renowned haunted locations. Its location, what is now 43 Church Street – was Bridget Bishop’s apple orchard. Bishop was Salem’s first accused witch to be convicted and was hung (along with her two dogs – who does that?!?) at Proctor’s Ledge on July 10th, 1692. Usual sightings include seeing her apparition often (especially floating in the staircase), people catch a faint scent of the apple orchard, she has been known to take people's silverware while there dining. Dine at your own risk!
Rockafellas Restaurant in the Daniel Low & Co building (231 Essex Street); as well as the second floor are supposedly uber haunted. Many people have seen Daniel Low himself on the second floor (where he had a heart attack and died on February 3rd, 1911 – It is said that his death raised the spirits of the building and the hauntings spiked), inside and outside the second floor – people have caught thousands of orbs on film, and seen repeat ghostly apparition sightings of the well-known Man in Black (who is known to not be very nice), and the Blue Lady; or Lady in Blue (**see below).
Essex Street has hidden, underground tunnels that were built during prohibition. I’m unsure how; but apparently many people died down there and the tunnels are known to echo the sound of footsteps, moaning and indescribable energy that is felt when in the basement of Rockafellas. Many say that this is where the Blue Lady was buried after being murdered by her lover and can still hear her bloodcurdling screams to this day. The stories vary; but in the end – if you’re seeking to find her… you know where to go.
FINAL WORDS:
October is beyond stacked and packed… please expect large crowds. Be kind and patient as you are just visiting, the people who work in Salem live there and have to deal with their city becoming a madhouse for a month or so each year. Plan ahead.
