Hey Borderhounds, as we quickly (and finally) approach spooky season 2024 - I felt it was important to give you another MUST VISIT destination that is literally soaked in haunted history! If you haven't already, make sure that you check out my ULTIMATE GUIDE to Salem Massachusetts that was released at the beginning of the month. I can promise you will NOT be disappointed with the recommendations made. Now, If you’re like my wife and myself... then you’ve got a taste for the eerie, the historic, and the just plain cool - then let me put you on to one of the most incredible day trips you can take in the New York area: Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown. I guarantee, this trip has everything - from spine-tingling legends to jaw-dropping architecture, and of course, some killer food. Let's dive into why these two neighboring towns should be next on your list of adventures.

Sleepy Hollow Cemetery: Where Legends Rest

First up, let’s discuss one of my favorite get-a-ways - more or less another home away from home for me personally... Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Aside from my deep rooted attachment, the place is absolutely iconic. Not only is it the final resting place of Washington Irving, the guy who penned 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow', but it’s also home to the graves of other legends like Andrew Carnegie, William Rockefeller, Walter Chrysler, Leona Helmsley and Elizabeth Arden. Walking through this cemetery is like taking a step back in time, with every turn revealing stories etched in stone.

But it’s not just about the famous names. The cemetery itself is an absolute masterpiece - rolling hills, towering trees, and some of the most stunning 19th-century mausoleums you’ll ever lay your eyes on in real life. If you’re a fan of history, architecture, or just enjoy a good ghost story, this is honestly the place to be. For those seeking guidance while navigating Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, there are an array of guided tours that’ll give you all the inside scoop on the cemetery’s most historical, as well as haunted spots. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel a chill run down my spine when visiting certain areas there. It’s the perfect mix of history and mystery - what more could you want?

Lyndhurst Mansion

Next, let's head over to Tarrytown to visit to famous Lyndhurst Mansion. This place is a Gothic fairytale come to life. Imagine a massive mansion perched on a hill overlooking the Hudson River, with turrets, spires, and all the Victorian-era charm you can handle. It’s simply like stepping into a different world - one where you half-expect a gaggle of vampires to come strolling out the front door. It's seriously just a sight to behold - BIG and incredible!

Lyndhurst was built in the 1830s and has been home to some largely influential folks, including railroad tycoon Jay Gould. The mansion’s interiors are just as impressive as the exterior, with ornate woodwork, stained glass (including many by Tiffany), and one of the most breathtaking art collections in the region. Whether you’re into architecture, history, or just want to feel like you’re living in a Gothic novel for a day, Lyndhurst Mansion is a must-see. If that weren't a cool enough reason to visit... don’t even get me started on the grounds. The gardens are like something out of a painting - lush, green, and meticulously maintained. It’s the kind of place where you can easily spend an afternoon just wandering around, soaking in the beauty and snapping a million photos.

Important:

While you may be really tempted to film Tik Tok videos, or do photoshoots on the grounds - it is strictly prohibited and frowned upon (unless with expressed permission from the estate itself). Feel free to take photos and enjoy yourself, just respect their rules!

Horsefeathers Restaurant

After a day full of exploring, you’re absolutely going to need to refuel, and there’s no better spot than Horsefeathers in Tarrytown. This spot is a local institution, and for good reason. It’s got that cozy, classic vibe that makes you feel right at home the minute you walk in. And the food? Absolutely top-notch. Whether you’re in the mood for a juicy burger, a perfectly cooked steak, some fresh seafood, or even just a snack, Horsefeathers has got you covered. What really sets this place apart is the atmosphere. It’s got that old-school charm with walls lined with books and vintage photos, and the kind of friendly service that makes you feel like a regular even if it’s your first time there. Very highly recommended - Also enjoy their outdoor seating!

PRO TIP:

If you’re there during the fall, definitely try one of their seasonal dishes. They really lean into the flavors of the season, and it’s the perfect way to wrap up a day of exploring the area.
